The Access to Work Mental Health Support Service is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions and available to those at work who need support with mental health, coping skills and workplace adjustments.

It is a cost-free service that you can promote to your workforce to help reduce absenteeism, presenteeism and workforce attrition.

Your employees can be signposted towards the Access to Work Mental Health Support Service where they can receive easy-to-access, confidential, one-to-one support to improve their wellbeing and help them to remain in work. How do employers promote this service to their employees?

We are happy to support you in promoting the service to your employees. You can register for access to our employer toolkit which contains resources to raise awareness of this service among your line managers, HR teams and employees.

We also have a dedicated Partnerships team who can help you to understand and embed the Access to Work Mental Health Support in your organisation.

How does the service differ to an Employer Assistance Programme (EAP) or Occupational Health (OH) service?

The Access to Work Mental Health Support Service offers non-clinical work-focused mental health support, to allow employees to perform well in their role while managing the symptoms of their mental health condition. It is available to anyone in employment and will complement an existing EAP or OH service.

How it differs from EAP and OH services that many employers provide:

  • Confidential support from a vocational rehabilitation consultant for nine months, offering longer term support than EAP and OH services.
  • Coping strategies to allow employees to effectively undertake their role in the workplace and to manage the symptoms of their mental health condition at work.
  • No formal diagnosis is required to access the support.
  • Effective workplace adjustments with employee consent; this could include meeting employers face-to-face.
  • Available to anyone in employment including those who are self-employed, contractors and apprentices.
